Statham Academy youth basketball tournaments prime objective is creating competitive age based tournaments with a great atmosphere for all levels to compete. We welcome gold, silver, bronze, and copper divisions at our events and we divide them up by age, not grade.
In an attempt to combat the growing trend of reclassifying players back strictly to gain competitive advantages, Statham Academy tournament participants must be the proper age for the given grade. Players are always welcome to play up but never down. Coaches and parents are expected to have clear, hard copies of the original birth certificate on hand. More information on this can be read below under the Challenge Section.
We believe in being part of the solution rather than doing nothing about it. For the record, we are not against players that reclassify for necessary reasons. However, we are when it’s strictly for competitive advantages. We do have one exception to this rule and that is during the months of September through February. During this time, 8th graders that have reclassified back will be allowed to play in our events due to the fact that they cannot play Frosh basketball during those months. We do have a rule, though, that each team can only have 1 player that has reclassified.
Challenge Section
If any coach or staff member believes there may be a discrepancy, a challenge can be made and a Statham Academy staff member will verify the birth certificate. Teams will be disqualified and suspended for a period of time from participating in our events if found to cheat. Do not bring unclear, blurry copies and if your son / daughter is tall/big, look older than their age, etc., please be prepared for any challenges so we can have the kids play in a timely manner.
